About
Spatial Message is an AR communication experience that uncovers and enhances the potential of space. This experience embodies the future of human communication and the power of space to connect people. Putting on a pair of NrealLight MR glasses, people are able to explore the space with finding messages embedded in the real world, collaborating on making a digital garden, and sending messages via the digital space.
Spatial Message demonstrates the potential of AR to bring out fascinating stories of space. Spatial Message was exhibited at the SCHOOL OF THE FUTURE festival held by TOKYO MIDTOWN and ARS ELECTRONICA.
Background
Spatial Message was an AR communication experience using ar glasses. it was exhibited at the SCHOOL OF THE FUTURE festival held by TOKYO MIDTOWN and ARS ELECTRONICA. In February 2020. this experience was developed in the collaborative research project with Hakuhodo DY Holdings to assess and explore the potential of AR communication experience.
Using a pair of NrealLight MR glasses, people walk around TOKYO MIDTOWN and enjoy interactive communication tied to the space. Through experiencing three types of immersive communication, people learn how ar technology will change our lives and ways to communication.
Execution
Spatial Message was co-planned and developed with Hakuhodo DY Holdings in the form of a cooperative research project of AR cloud communication. In the early stage of the project, we asked ourselves one question, “how will ar glasses change our communication style in the future?” to answer this question, our team had discussed possible future visions of AR communication and built 3 types of communication experience to assess our ideas.
Each idea was born out of elaborate research, knowledge accumulated through our previous experiments, and our future vision we truly seek to achieve, not out of dreamy concepts or simple ideas.
Results
Spatial Message contains 3 uniquely different AR communication experiences. We planed them to maximize the value and potential of spatial characteristics for each location.
Area I “Walkway of Thoughts” offers a social experience of exchanging messages via the space by embedding them to specific locations. Putting on a pair of ar glasses, users walk around the floor and find and receive messages talking about spacial characteristics.
Area II “Upside-down Karesansui” is an collaborative activity to build a virtual landscape of Karesansui, a traditional japanese garden. Using environmental features of the real world in the experience, people contributes to the formation of a mixed reality landscape in collaboration.
Area III “Arcade of Wishes” is a social experience of storing messages in a mixed reality space. A virtual message bank exists part of the building. People have access to the bank and enjoy spatial message communication.
